Defense Agency to Provide Daily Rations to FEMA

Troop support meals for disaster survivors is estimated to save millions.

The Defense Logistics Agency’s (DLA) Troop Support has developed the Survivor Daily Ration (SDR) to provide a complete daily ration package for disaster survivors, meeting the unique needs of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The SDR consists of 10 unique meal packages—each containing a full day’s worth of food for an adult, with a minimum shelf life of three years at a temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The rations are designed to help reduce environmental waste and eliminate the need for food preparation during emergency situations. The DLA Troop Support is expected to save $66.5 million every three years as FEMA increases its stock to 27 million meals.

“We want to make sure that we are providing the best for Americans in need,” said Tiendung Nguyen, individual rations branch chief for DLA troop support’s subsistence supply chain. “We have relationships with vendors of which we know have the capacity to mass produce high-quality products.”
